Day 8: Saturday, September 21, 2013

55 miles from Bell’s Island Campground in Carrituck, SC to Nags Head, SC.  The view at the beginning of the ride was fabulous.  Much of the route was east on Route 158, a heavily traveled road.  ACA managed to use some alternative routes despite the proximity to the water.  Those roads were less traveled, well-shaded and passed through beautiful land.  Changing directions also provided relief to the headwinds that were prevalent all day.  There were lots of hunters out and I saw three geese drop from the sky after hearing a volley of shots.  Crossing the Wright Memorial Bridge was a white-knuckle experience.  The west-bound bridge was closed, so there was 2-way traffic with no shoulder.  The bridge is really long.  I had rested, stretched, and eaten so I was able to pedal furiously, but I was exhausted when I got to the end.Once I got into Kill Devil Hills, the wind was brutal.  Every mile was torture.  It was a relief to stop  Hopefully, we won’t have a head wind all the way down the barrier island. We are staying at Cape Hatteras KOA.
