40 miles from Newport, NC to Onslow Beach RV Camp at Camp
LeJeune, NC. We headed east again
toward the water and rode through some really cute beachy little towns. The
area was billed as the Crystal Coast which I have never heard of before. We stopped off in the town of Swansboro which
was adorable and had a fabulous lunch of shrimp and grits. We saw the name Croatan on several street
signs and passed the Croatan National Forest.
It turns out the Croatan were a small Native American group living in
the coastal areas of what is now North Carolina. They may have been a branch of the larger
Roanoke people or allied with them. While our route was pretty straightforward,
we weren’t entirely sure of the distance to the campground. According to the maps, we knew there was a
back gate into the base, but I wasn’t sure that we could use it. We took a chance and were rewarded with success. It was a much nicer ride because it took us
off the main highway. Once we were on
the base, there was virtually no traffic.
The guards at the gate weren’t sure where we were going, but they headed
us in the right direction. The road
seemed to be endless at one point in time, but we finally saw a sign to Onslow
Beach. We actually arrived at the
campground before Bob. Our site is
bounded by the ocean on one side and the Intracoastal Waterway on the
other. Very nice indeed. We are contemplating staying here a day or
two as Donna’s friend Annie will be out of town Saturday. Bob is studying the maps even as I type
this.
