Day 7: Friday, September 20, 2013

53 miles from Davis Lakes and Campground in Suffolk, VA to Camden, NC.  We crossed the NC State line about 17 miles into our trip.  We decided to take the Outer Banks alternative route because there are more RV campgrounds in that area.  Our turn-off for the alternative route was at the intersection of SR 32 and 158.  Before we reached this point, we stopped at an ABC County liquor store near Holly Grove.  The very nice gentleman knew immediately that we were bicycling south and he said he has spoken to lots of bicyclists.  Since he was the first bathroom stop on the route, I am sure many stop. When he looked at our route, he suggested a shortcut that kept us off the main highway for several miles. Donna pointed out cray fish chimneys in the drainage swales.  I had never noticed these before although she says we have them in Maryland also. We skirted the Dismal Swamp.  Quite an appropriate name.  We are camping on Currituck Sound in the Outer Banks.
