Day 19: Wednesday, October 2, 2013

49 miles from Rhems, SC to Joint Base Charleston Short Stay Outdoor Recreation Area, Moncks Corner, SC.  We couldn’t find a campground for about 100 miles which was further than we wanted to bicycle.  Bob was able to book a site at a fabulous Navy Recreation Area.  We had him drop us off about 50 miles away and started our trip.  We first passed through the small town of Andrews which is the home of Chubby Checker.  A long-time resident of the city, Bobby Barrineau, stopped and told us all about the history of the area.  He was quite a character.  Then we rode through the Francis Marion National Forest, home of Swamp Fox.  I wasn’t familiar with him, but Donna used to watch the Disney show that was based on his escapades and adventures.  He is known as the father of American guerrilla warfare  The forest was beautiful, smelled like fresh pine, and had very little traffic.  Our camp is on Moultrie Lake and is magnificent.  We are headed toward Charleston tomorrow.  We’ll bicycle part of the way in, then drive with Bob, into the RV campground at Charleston Naval Weapon Station.
